HBO’s New Gay Show Looking…Hmmm

I wasn’t exactly sure what to think when I saw the ads for the new HBO series Looking.  Actually, I thought, “Here we go again.  Another Queer as Folk!”, but that wasn’t the case at all.  Looking highly exceeded my expectations and poses to be something completely different.

I wrote up an entire review on my website raannt and we posted it as the Sexiest New TV Show, but I also felt like doing a short video to reflect on what I thought of the premiere of the show.  Check it out below!

What did you think of the show? Do you have any recommendations for gay movies, books or tv shows that you think I’d like? Let me know and post it below in the comments.

For now,

Hey, Peter! I also enjoyed the first episode of “Looking.” I am a fan of Jonathan Groff (Patrick) in his Broadway life. He’s a very talented stage performer, and I was happy to see that he can act on TV. . . and be sexy, too! Both he and Murray Bartlett (Dom, the waiter) are gay, so that helps. The lone straight man among the top 3 actors here is Frankie Alvarez (Agustin), but he passes for gay very well, imho. GREAT CAST! Also good about this episode – and, I hope, the whole series – is the matter-of-factness about gay life, and the lack of the glitz that, again in my opinion, cheapened QAF. I’m looking forward to the rest of the episodes (5 more, I believe) for this season.

Recommended movies, and I apologize in advance if you’ve seen some or all, or if you watch and don’t like:

“Shortbus”. . . amazing film, as much about NYC as about gay life there. Known for including actual sex without being pornographic.

“Get Real” and “A Beautiful Thing”. . . 2 from the 90’s from the UK. Both are moving, first-love/coming out stories that touch me even after seeing them both multiple times. If you can only watch one, watch “Get Real.”

“Latter Days”. . . the story of a closeted gay Mormon on a mission in West Hollywood. . . NOT a comedy. . . a beautiful story, again imo.

“The Unfabulous Social Life of Ethan Green”. . . good story about a gay young man.

If you don’t mind subtitles, three really good flix from other countries:

    “Walk on Water” from Israel.

“The Bubble” from Israel – a great film, imo, and as much about the stupidity of the Israeli/Palestinian mutual hatred as it is about the two main characters.

“Unconditional Love” or “Unconditional: (it’s known by both titles. . . from the UK

“Free Fall”. . . a very sexy movie from Germany.

I have lots more good ones that I could mention, but this should keep you for a while. Some are on Netflix.

Oh. . . two more from France that I forgot:

“Time to Leave”. . . sad story, but it does have Jeanne Moreau!

“Stranger by the Lake”. . . a psychological thriller with lots of penises. . . seriously, it’s a good story with eye candy.

    Pax et bonum,

You really made me want to watch this show now. I don’t know when/if they will screen it in South Africa but if not I will have to watch it online.

I liked what you said about threesomes and how it is not just a gay thing (like many people think) because all gays do is have sex and hop from man to man.

Before I watched the video, I read that you wanted some recommendations, and I had just read a review on “Weekend” from one of the lovely bloggers I follow. Maybe you have seen his review?

Also, “A Density Of Souls” by Christopher Rice is a book I would recommend.

I’ve been wanting to see Weekend for awhile now! I guess this weekend is Weekend!

I am going to watch it on Saturday too. Perhaps we can compare notes.

Have you read the book I was talking about?

I know, right? It came out exactly at the time I needed a movie like that, so it means a lot to me.
