I never thought I’d be one of those people who has brunch at the same place every week, but needless to say, every Sunday between the hours of 2-3, you can find my husband and I seated, usually by the middle window, eating our lunch at Cafe Patachou River Crossing in Indianapolis.
I’m not really sure how this tradition started, but sometime after noon, we roll out of bed, the dogs quickly at our feet and pull on our clothes to head over to Patachou. Brunch used to be this event where I would shower and get ready first, trying to make a whole day out of the meal, but I now believe that brunch is best enjoyed under a baseball cap, behind thick sunglasses and followed by a nap with a movie in the background.
Indianapolis has all kinds of places to eat for brunch, but somehow we’ve settled into Cafe Patachou. The waitresses always welcome us with the cordial “Hey guys”, making us feel at home, as does the smell of their varied coffee flavors, different daily.
Every week, I either get the Chicken Salad sandwich on whole wheat, untoasted, with chips. A Diet Coke or fresh orange juice is also a must. I’m not sure why, but their Diet Coke, out of the can, always tastes fresher than anywhere else in town. If I’m not in a lunchy mood, I settle on the Croissant French Toast, with tons of syrup. Today, I had a side of the best cinnamon toast ever! I asked Alex if he wanted a bite but he said he doesn’t like cinnamon toast. Who doesn’t like cinnamon toast?
Alex is particular in that he always gets the same thing; A Caesar Salad Club salad with chicken instead of turkey. He also gets a huge bowl of their Turkey Chili. I love their Tomato Artichoke soup, but it’s sometimes too filling with a sandwich.
I’m not really sure why Cafe Patachou is so magical, but it is the perfect place, summer or winter, for brunch any day of the week, but especially Sundays. Maybe it’s that they always make us feel so at home. Maybe it’s the feel of a college town diner with a New York eatery. Maybe it’s the constant flow of friends we run into while there or the delectable smells filling the room. Maybe it’s all of the above. One thing is certain…Cafe Patachou is always good every time! Come check it out and say hi to us some Sunday!
