The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Indianapolis and surrounding areas for tonight and tomorrow and I’m telling you now…it better come! I am so tired of these warnings, year after year, which get me excited for a snow day, reminiscent of years past when I was in elementary school, only to wake and find just a sprinkling of snow on the ground.
No! I want a rush on the grocery stores for milk and bread kind of storm! I want people sliding on sidewalks and smearing their asses in a wintry mess! I want power outages that force the use of candles and wood burning fireplaces! Just for once, I would love to have a real, down and out winter storm! Especially just weeks before Christmas. The only thing better would be if this all happened on Christmas Eve!
And I know I’ll receive a backlash from people who will say, “Why would you ever wish for a winter storm”, or “power outages and people falling? You’re twisted!”. Maybe I am twisted. Or maybe it’s simply that somewhere out there I still believe exists the most perfect snow day, where I eat tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches, sled all afternoon and find mysteries in the snowy wood only to come home to hot chocolate and a good Christmas movie on TV.
As adults we complicate everything. Instead of seeing the joy and wonder in storms and craziness, we only see how it will make our lives more difficult instead of embracing the difficulties and making our lives even better and more enriched! It’s not exactly like we’re Laura Ingalls Wilder in The Long Winter during the worst winter storms of the 1800’s. No…we’ll survive, but most of us will bitch so much about the storm that we’ll miss the mystery and the beauty along the way.
As for me, I’m waxing down my sled!
