Last Saturday, I was driving around with a friend and we had the radio station turned to the Christmas station, which will play Christmas music now until New Years, 24 hours a day. It always takes me a few days to get into the Christmas mood but once I’m in it, there’s no going back.
In the background we heard The Chipmunks and The Trans-Siberian Orchestra, not two of my favorites. My friend and I began a discussion about our favorite Christmas music. We both agreed our favorites were more of the Rat Pack variety, while a schmaltzy version of Sleigh Ride started blaring through the speakers. We both started laughing as we discussed the word schmaltzy and how it perfectly applied to the varied versions of many of the Christmas carols. Although we’re not huge fans of that music, we found ourselves jiving and laughing our asses off to the cheesy music. It only took us 2 seconds to realize we were listening to the divine perfection of Debbie Gibson‘s Sleigh Ride!
Utter glory and joy rang from our car as we danced and laughed our way through the cold evening.
Only after I let her out at her house, and I was on my way home, the sound of Celine Dion‘s O Holy Night whispering through my speakers, did I realize that serene Christmas music is best listened to alone. The schmaltzy tunes are the stuff of magical rides with friends!
